Big Spring police arrest man in capital murder case

A Big Spring man has been arrested following a double homicide investigation that led authorities to pursue a capital murder charge.

According to the Big Spring Police Department, 22-year-old Rueben Gonzales was arrested Saturday after investigators determined probable cause existed for a charge of capital murder.

Officers were dispatched Friday night to the 1600 block of Oriole Street following reports of shots fired.

Authorities said officers with the Big Spring Police Department and the Howard County Sheriff’s Office arrived to find two men lying in the front yard of a residence. The victims were identified as 44-year-old Willis J. Duval and 23-year-old Marcus D. Pena.

The Big Spring Fire Department and Allegiance EMS responded to the scene and attempted life-saving measures, but both men were pronounced dead, police said.

Investigators reported that Duval and Pena suffered gunshot wounds.

The Big Spring Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division, identification personnel and the Texas Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers were called to assist with the investigation.

Authorities have not released additional details regarding a motive or the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The investigation remains ongoing.
