Midland Fire Department reported emergency medical service calls accounted for nearly 79% of all department responses during April, according to monthly department statistics released Friday.
The department responded to 2,018 calls during the month, up from 1,917 calls in April 2025. EMS calls totaled 1,586 in April, a 12% increase compared to the same month last year, and represented 78.59% of all Midland Fire Department responses countywide.
Within the city limits of Midland, EMS responses made up 79.54% of total calls, according to department data. Officials said EMS calls had accounted for approximately 75% of department activity heading into April.
The department recorded 50 fire calls in April, down from 58 during the same month last year. “Other” calls — including responses related to carbon monoxide incidents, gas leaks, hazardous materials, submerged vehicles, downed lines and unusual odors — decreased from 444 calls in April 2025 to 382 calls this year.
From January through April, the department responded to 7,818 total calls, compared to 7,724 during the same period in 2025. EMS responses increased from 5,714 calls during the first four months of 2025 to 6,034 this year.
Fire calls for the January-through-April period increased slightly from 242 calls in 2025 to 252 calls in 2026. “Other” calls declined from 1,768 to 1,532 during the same period.
Outside Midland city limits, countywide fire department responses decreased compared to last year. The department responded to 312 calls outside city limits in April, down from 333 in April 2025. Countywide calls from January through April totaled 868 this year, compared to 1,415 during the same period in 2025.
According to the report, county EMS calls outside city limits declined from 1,018 during the first four months of 2025 to 608 this year. County fire calls also decreased from 96 to 74 over the same period.
