FAA awards $4 million grant for Midland airport terminal expansion project

By Midland Times

Federal Aviation Administration announced this week that Midland International Air & Space Port will receive $4 million in Airport Infrastructure Grant funding through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to support the airport’s terminal expansion project.

According to airport officials, the funding will help pay for passenger screening checkpoint expansion and terminal modernization improvements as part of a project estimated to cost approximately $50 million, including design expenses.

With the latest award, the airport has secured about $29 million in federal grant funding for the project, representing roughly 48% of the total estimated cost. Officials said the remaining costs are expected to be covered through the airport’s operating fund and reimbursed through future Passenger Facility Charge collections.

The terminal expansion project comes as Midland International Air & Space Port continues to experience elevated passenger activity following consecutive years of record airline passenger growth.

Airport officials said the project is intended to improve passenger flow, terminal capacity and overall airport functionality.

Federal funding secured for the project to date includes approximately $2.8 million for project design through the Airport Terminal Program, $8 million through the Airport Terminal Program, $14.3 million through Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Airport Infrastructure Grants for fiscal years 2025 and 2026, and the newly announced $4 million Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act grant.
