Hooks edge RockHounds 2-1 as Corpus Christi hands Midland fifth straight loss

By Midland Times

The Corpus Christi Hooks defeated the Midland RockHounds 2-1 Wednesday night at Whataburger Field, extending Midland’s losing streak to five games.

The game remained tied 1-1 until the sixth inning, when Corpus Christi shortstop Max Holy hit a solo home run to left field that proved to be the game-winning run.

Holy also contributed defensively during the game, ending two Midland scoring opportunities in the early innings. In the first inning, he made a catch on a line drive hit by Bobby Boser with two runners on base and two outs. In the second inning, Holy fielded a sharp ground ball from Ryan Lasko with the infield drawn in and threw home to record the out at the plate.

Corpus Christi opened the scoring before Midland tied the game earlier in the contest. The RockHounds stranded eight runners on base, grounded into a double play and had three runners caught stealing.

Leo De Vries extended his hitting streak to five games for Midland. During that stretch, he is batting .476 with three runs scored and four stolen bases.

Midland pitchers A.J. Causey and Wei-En Lin combined for several effective innings in the loss. Causey threw two scoreless innings and has not allowed a run in seven appearances during May. Lin returned from the injured list and pitched into the fifth inning, allowing one run on two hits while striking out four batters.

With the loss, Midland dropped to 22-19 and remained in a tightly contested Texas League South Division race. Corpus Christi improved to 19-22.

The teams are scheduled to continue the series Thursday night at Whataburger Field. James Hicks is expected to start for Corpus Christi against Midland’s Jamie Arnold.
