Midland MSA records lowest unemployment rate in Texas in April

The Midland Metropolitan Statistical Area posted the lowest unemployment rate among metropolitan statistical areas in Texas in April, according to data released May 22 by the Texas Workforce Commission.

The Midland MSA recorded a 2.9% unemployment rate, down from 3.0% in March and up from 2.6% in April 2025.

The unemployment rate in Midland remained below the statewide average and national average, which each measured 4.0% in April.

Other Texas metropolitan areas with low unemployment rates included Abilene at 3.0%, San Angelo at 3.1% and College Station-Bryan at 3.1%. Lubbock and Amarillo each recorded 3.2% unemployment rates, while the Austin-Round Rock area posted 3.4%.

The civilian labor force in Midland measured 107,200 in April, compared to 107,800 in April 2025, according to the report.

Among West Texas metropolitan areas, Lubbock reported the region’s largest civilian labor force at 187,700, followed by Amarillo at 139,900. Midland ranked third at 107,200, ahead of Abilene at 89,400, Odessa at 87,700 and San Angelo at 62,100.
