Penwell Knights Raceway to host ‘West Texas NITRO Showdown’

Penwell Knights Raceway will celebrate its 60th anniversary May 29-30 with the “West Texas NITRO Showdown” presented by Funny Car Chaos.

The two-day racing event will feature Funny Car Chaos competition along with several additional racing divisions and entertainment activities, according to funnycarchaos.com. Scheduled attractions include a Small Tire Shootout, Nitro Mike’s Wheelstander performances, Proud American Ride Dragsters, 6.00 and 7.00 Index racing, West Texas Gangstas competition and a Junior Dragster Shootout. The event will also include fireworks.

Friday’s schedule includes Funny Car Chaos qualifying rounds and a test-and-tune session limited to slick and radial tire vehicles. Racer gates are scheduled to open at 10 a.m., while spectator gates open at 3 p.m. Test-and-tune sessions will take place from 6 p.m. until midnight, with Funny Car qualifying rounds at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. Wheelstander exhibitions and additional attractions are also scheduled Friday evening.

Parking will open Thursday from noon to 8 p.m.

Saturday’s activities are scheduled to begin with racer gate access at 9 a.m. A chapel service is planned for 10 a.m. in the pit area, and spectator gates will open at 11 a.m. Time trials will begin at 2 p.m., followed by Funny Car eliminations at 5 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Organizers said all racing classes are expected to conclude Saturday night with a winners circle ceremony.
