The 10th Annual Bowling for Fur-Babes is returning Feb. 28, bringing together animal lovers from across the Permian Basin for a morning of friendly competition and fundraising to benefit Grand Companions.
The event, which begins with check-in at 10 a.m. and bowling at 10:30 a.m., has become a staple fundraiser for the organization over the past decade. According to Leslie McElroy, Bowling for Fur-Babes started “very organically” 10 years ago when a devoted supporter combined her love of pets and bowling to spearhead a fundraiser on behalf of Grand Companions.
Today, the nonprofit hosts the event, but its heart remains the same.
“Bowling for Fur-Babes is a beloved event to our organization,” McElroy said. “We hope that everyone knows just how grateful we are for the support of our community. We truly couldn’t do what we do without it.”
While the event has grown over the years, she said it continues to focus on fun, community and a shared love of helping homeless pets.
Funds raised during Bowling for Fur-Babes directly support the organization’s mission. “All the money raised directly supports Grand Companions’ mission to help people save, honor, and connect with pets,” McElroy said. “This is one of our few fundraising events of the year and we put all the money raised right back into our programs.”
Participants can expect more than just bowling. In addition to a three-game series, the event will feature door prizes and a towel raffle. Because the organization’s pets “always need something soft to snuggle on,” attendees are encouraged to bring new or used full-size bath towels.
Each donated towel earns one raffle ticket for a chance to win an Arctic King mini fridge and freezer.
For those unable to attend in person, there are still ways to support the cause. Community members can make a general donation, sponsor the event or participate in the online auction scheduled for Feb. 24-26. Auction items include a two-night stay at Canyon Ranch in Tucson with airfare and spa vouchers, West Texas Symphony tickets and gift cards to local restaurants.
Whether lacing up bowling shoes or bidding online, McElroy said the goal remains the same: bringing the community together to make a difference for homeless pets.
