On October 27, 1953, Second Lieutenant George H. O’Brien Jr. received the Medal of Honor from President Dwight D. Eisenhower for his bravery during the First Battle of the Hook in the Korean War. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, O’Brien later settled in Midland, where he devoted himself to family and community service after his military career. He was an active volunteer at the Big Spring Veterans Administration Medical Center and received posthumous honors, including resolutions from the Texas State House and Senate, scholarships in his name, and a statue at the VA center where he volunteered. O’Brien’s legacy as a Medal of Honor recipient and dedicated community member continues to inspire and honor his memory in Midland, Texas, and beyond.
