Governor Greg Abbott has officially launched his campaign for re-election in 2026, making the announcement during an event in Houston. The governor emphasized the importance of Texas’s identity and values while introducing a new property tax reform plan aimed at addressing concerns about rising appraisals and giving homeowners greater control over their taxes.

During his speech, Abbott highlighted Texas’s unique role in the country. “Texas is not just another state. It’s our home. Our heritage. Texas is the heartbeat of this land we call America,” said Governor Abbott. “As Texans, we will defend this state with every fiber of our being. We will protect what we built, finish what we started, and lead Texas into its glorious future.”

Abbott’s proposed property tax reform seeks to address issues with local governments increasing property tax rates, which he noted is a primary source of concern for residents rather than actions by the state government itself. “It’s time to drive a stake through the heart of local property tax hikes for good,” Abbott said. “We are going to turn the tables on local taxing authorities, put the power with the people, and put an end to out-of-control property taxes in Texas.”

The governor concluded his remarks by urging Texans to support his campaign as he pledged to defend state culture and values against political opponents. “What we have in Texas is precious, but it can all be destroyed in one bad election. Make no mistake: Democrats want that election to be this election,” Abbott continued. “We are Texans, and in 2026 we will remind the whole world that the spirit of Texas will never be broken. We will win this election. We will defend this great state. We will leave our children and grandchildren a Texas that is safer, stronger, freer, and more prosperous than ever before.”
