Midland Independent School District’s commitment to innovative staffing is paying off through the success of its Associate Teacher program, a model that pairs emerging educators with veteran mentors.

According to a news release, the district’s strategy involves creating roles that provide hands-on experience and direct guidance. This ensures students receive high-quality, grade-level instruction while offering passionate professionals a clear pathway into the education field. The approach allows administrators to be flexible and supportive, fostering an environment where new teacher leaders can emerge and thrive.

One notable example of this model is Kara Bergeron, an Associate Teacher whose career in education began as a practical shift and evolved into a genuine calling. Initially joining as a Teacher Assistant in early 2023, Bergeron quickly realized her impact on the classroom. Now working with sixth graders, she has transitioned into a confident educator who prioritizes student engagement. Her growth exemplifies the district’s mentorship framework, pairing her with veteran teacher Mr. Porras to ensure every lesson is effective.

In the classroom, Bergeron is recognized for an “action-oriented” style that combines rigorous learning with genuine connection. Whether using tools like the Wayground program or conducting hands-on science experiments—such as an egg-drop test that ended in a lesson on “the silence of the splat”—she makes education approachable and exciting. For Bergeron, success is measured by more than just data; it’s found when a reserved student gains confidence to participate in the collaborative environment she fosters.

Bergeron’s philosophy emphasizes that connection must precede instruction. By partnering closely with families and her sixth-grade team, she ensures every student feels seen, safe, and valued as an individual first. Through the Associate Teacher program, Midland ISD isn’t merely filling vacancies; it is cultivating dedicated mentors like Bergeron who leave lasting impacts on their students’ academic and personal lives.
