Mayor Lori Blong visited second graders at the Midland Independent School District’s newest elementary campus last week.

The event highlighted the importance of literacy and community engagement in local schools. During her visit, Blong read “Horton Hatches the Egg” by Dr. Seuss to the entire second grade, according to a Facebook post by Blong. The school was observing National Read Across America Day according to Blong.

After reading the book, Blong answered questions from students about her family, her decision to run for mayor, the elections process, challenges of her position, and what she enjoys most about serving the city. “Second graders ask good questions and they keep you on your toes… It was a fun afternoon with a great group of students and teachers,” Blong said according to Facebook.

Lone Star Trails second grade teacher Sasha Dizol coordinated Blong’s visit. The 40th campus to open in Midland Independent School District (MISD), Lone Star Trails began educating students at the start of the current academic year. It currently serves children in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. Following grade reconfiguration in 2028, the school will have fifth graders according to Facebook.
