Mayor Lori Blong visited the West Texas Food Bank where she was invited to create a bowl ahead of the nonprofit organization’s Empty Bowls event later this month.
Empty Bowls is an annual event that aims to raise awareness of food insecurity in West Texas and support the daily work of the food bank. The initiative provides community members with an opportunity to contribute while also learning about local hunger issues.
Blong said in a Facebook post, “Empty Bowls intends to raise awareness of food insecurity in West Texas while supporting the daily work of the Food Bank. It was an honor to play even a small part in it” according to Blong.
The West Texas Food Bank will host Empty Bowls at Midland College, located at 3600 N. Garfield St., on March 28 at 11 a.m. The event, now in its 26th year, allows attendees to taste various soups and purchase handmade bowls crafted by community members. “Your $15 ticket provides a simple meal — and helps fill the bowls of neighbors facing food insecurity,” the food bank said on Facebook. Tickets are available online according to the food bank.
Blong thanked the West Texas Food Bank for serving families across the region and encouraged public participation in Empty Bowls. “I hope you’ll stop by and support the mission that feeds many of our neighbors,” she said according to Blong.
