Shelly Haney, associate vice president of early childhood and dean of education at Midland College, is championing the college’s Pre-K Academy as a critical investment in early learning and long-term student success.
According to Haney, who draws on her experience as an administrator with Midland Independent School District (ISD), early childhood education plays a defining role in shaping students’ confidence, curiosity, and academic habits. She said in a blog post that locating a Pre-K Academy on the Midland College campus creates a unique, mutually beneficial learning environment. Young children receive high-quality early education while college students pursuing degrees in early childhood education gain hands-on classroom experience from the start of their training, working directly with children under faculty supervision.
The program also aims to expand access to early education for Midland families by providing additional Pre-K seats in a safe, supportive setting. Haney said the academy supports working parents while giving children a strong academic and social start, reinforcing the importance of accessible early childhood programs across the community.
Haney credited community partners and supporters for helping sustain and grow the Pre-K Academy. She noted their investment allows Midland College to strengthen learning environments and better prepare future educators. The program benefits the entire region by preparing children for kindergarten, developing the next generation of teachers, and reinforcing the college’s commitment to education at every level.
