Midland College athletes were recognized this week by the Western Junior College Athletic Conference, with Lady Chap Alexys Cornejo named Softball Position Player of the Week and Chaparrals Jorge Gil and Tyler Spruiell earning Baseball Player of the Week honors.
According to a news release, these awards highlight strong early-season performances by both Midland College programs. Cornejo, a freshman third baseman from Andrews, led the Lady Chaps offensively, batting .600 with a double, three home runs, and seven RBIs while also drawing two walks. Her performance powered Midland College’s offense, which hit .398 as a team in its most recent series. Cornejo went 6-for-10 over the weekend, while teammates Adeline Noriega, Emma Davis, and Jozanna Montes each hit .450 or better. In the circle, sophomore Anays Perez anchored the staff with two wins as Midland College improved to 4-0.
On the baseball side, sophomore first baseman Jorge Gil was named WJCAC Position Player of the Week after batting .684 with two doubles, a triple and a home run. Gil hit for the cycle in Game 3 of a series sweep against Wharton County, finishing the week with seven RBIs, nine runs scored, and three stolen bases. Sophomore Tyler Spruiell of Western Texas College earned Pitcher of the Week honors after allowing just three hits over five innings while striking out seven.

Meanwhile, the Chaparrals continue to build momentum behind standout performances on both sides of the ball as conference play takes shape.
