Midland Animal Services reported record numbers for adoptions, live release rate, and average length of stay in January 2026. The department facilitated 94 adoptions during the month, which is the highest number recorded for January. This figure contributed to managing a total intake of 369 animals, also a new high for January.

The outcomes for dogs and cats included 94 adoptions, 48 returns to owners, and 75 transfers. The euthanasia count stood at 73, with less than half attributed to space limitations. Of those euthanized, reasons included medical issues (16), quality of life concerns (13), behavioral factors (9), and space constraints (35).

Midland Animal Services achieved a live release rate of 77%, marking the highest percentage for January since 2023. The average length of stay dropped to its lowest on record for the month at 11.02 days across all animals. Specifically, dogs had an average stay of 9.33 days, puppies averaged 12.8 days, cats stayed an average of 10.89 days, and kittens averaged 11.08 days.

Transfers played a role in these outcomes as well; top partners included Fix West Texas with 47 transfers, Whiskers and Tails with seven, MASA with six, Sassy’s Dog Rescue with four, Lonestar with two, and Trans Pecos with five.

Intake sources were mainly strays (296), followed by owner surrenders (59) and seized animals (14). There were no returns or transfer-ins reported.
