The Midland College Board of Trustees has unanimously voted to extend an offer for an oil and gas lease and surface use agreement to Midland-Petro and Permian Deep Rock. The 8-0 decision follows several months of negotiations, allowing the companies to potentially develop oil resources on college-owned property.

If accepted, the agreement could bring up to $200 million to the City of Midland, which officials say would strengthen the local economy and support Midland’s reputation in energy innovation and responsible development.

“This offer,” said Mike Oestmann, Midland College Board Trustee, “required careful consideration of land use restrictions, student safety, and long-term implications for Midland College’s ability to serve the community, which is, ultimately, our reason for existing.”

Board Chairman Steve Kiser stated, “We believe this offer is fair and reasonable and is in the best interest of the community, the college, and its students.”

Representatives from Midland-Petro and Permian Deep Rock expressed their commitment to working with a local institution. “We are proud to be part of this community and that Midland College is going to trust us to develop their minerals,” stated David H. Arrington of Midland-Petro and Permian Deep Rock.

Dr. Damon Kennedy, president of Midland College, leads the institution. He commented on the board’s process: “Since 1972, Midland  College has been committed to serving our community, expanding opportunities for students, and contributing to the region’s economic strength. I appreciate our trustees carefully evaluating every option with our students’ success and the community’s future as the priority. We are ready to continue moving forward with the important business of the college.”

Midland College offers a variety of academic programs focused on student success. The college provides pathways designed around excellence and opportunity while supporting both professional growth and community improvement. The campus has expanded over time through bond issues and donations, reflecting its ongoing role in regional development. In addition to academics, the school has won multiple NJCAA national championships in golf and basketball.

The board emphasized that student safety remains central as they consider new initiatives aimed at benefiting both students and residents.
