The government of Midland County has warned residents of a scam in which individuals are falsely claiming to represent the Midland County Clerk’s Office and demanding payment to avoid a warrant or other legal action.

The warning is intended to alert the public to fraudulent activity that could result in financial loss for victims. The county said these scams can undermine trust in local government offices and target vulnerable individuals.

According to a Facebook post by Midland County, the scam involves victims being told to purchase prepaid cash cards, provide the security code over the phone, and even mail the used cards to the office to make the action look official. “This is not legitimate,” the county said according to its Facebook post.

The county added that the Midland County Clerk’s Office will never request prepaid card payments, card numbers or mail-in gift cards. It advised residents who receive such phone calls to hang up, not provide any information and report the scam according to its Facebook post.

According to the county, this scam targeting the clerk’s office is similar to those involving other county offices. The public is urged to spread the word about them and help protect the community, the post said according to its Facebook post.
