As Halloween approaches, the Midland Independent School District (ISD) Police Department is reminding families to prioritize safety during trick-or-treating activities.

According to a new video shared on the district’s Facebook page, Officers Asheley Fuentes and Ismir Cortinas provided practical advice to help ensure a fun and accident-free night. The officers emphasized the importance of using sidewalks and crosswalks, looking both ways before crossing streets, and ensuring costumes are visible to drivers. “If you’re wearing a dark costume, add reflective tape or carry glow sticks so cars and others can easily spot you,” Officer Cortinas said.

Families were also reminded that children should trick-or-treat in groups with a responsible adult, stay in familiar neighborhoods, and only approach homes with porch lights on. Fuentes urged kids not to enter strangers’ homes and to wait until they returned home before eating candy, advising them to have an adult inspect all treats first.

The department also encouraged trick-or-treaters to carry a flashlight to remain visible throughout the night. The safety campaign, supported by MISD Crime Stoppers, aims to ensure students and families enjoy a fun, safe, and memorable Halloween.
