Midland ISD Students in Philanthropy program empowers teens to support local nonprofits

A group of Midland ISD juniors and seniors is making a difference across the community through the district’s Students in Philanthropy (SIP) program, a hands-on course that teaches students how to support nonprofit organizations and lead community service efforts.

The SIP program is designed to give students practical experience in philanthropy while supporting local organizations. According to a according to the news release.

The Legacy High School SIP chapter has already seen success this year. The chapter won a $10,000 grant at the Dallas Cowboys Community Captains Huddle Day of Service hosted by Chevron. Students used these funds to renovate the media room at the Taylor Park Boys and Girls Club. In addition, SIP students mentor younger students each week at Greathouse Elementary and participate in districtwide “Days of Service” events during which they volunteer at nonprofit organizations across the Permian Basin. The program culminates each May with “Prize Patrol Day,” when students deliver grant awards to local nonprofits selected during the year, according to the news release.

The Midland Independent School District aims to enhance student achievement and support diverse groups through targeted educational and assistance programs according to its official website.
