Midland recorded the second-lowest unemployment rate in Texas for January, according to figures released by the Texas Workforce Commission on April 3. The city’s jobless rate rose to 3.4%, up from 3.1% a year earlier and from 2.9% in December, but remained below both state and national averages.

The data shows that Midland continues to have strong employment numbers compared to much of Texas and the United States. According to the Workforce Commission, only Amarillo had a lower unemployment rate at 3.3%. Other West Texas cities also posted low rates: San Angelo at 3.5% and Abilene at 3.6%. The state average was reported at 4.5%, while the national average stood at 4.7%.

The civilian labor force in Midland reached approximately 106,000 people in January, representing a slight increase from January of last year when it was about 105,700, as indicated by the Commission’s report.

According to the official website, Midland emphasizes values such as excellence, innovation, integrity, and inclusivity with an aim of promoting community unity and prosperity. The city operates as a home rule municipality under its charter adopted on Nov. 5, 1940 according to official records. It is located in the heart of the Permian Basin—a region noted for its influence on global energy production and regional growth according to city information.

In addition to municipal operations and community development initiatives as described by city officials, Midland maintains more than 1,364 acres of parkland that includes neighborhood parks, pools, sports complexes, and community centers according to official sources.

The City of Midland aims not only for economic stability but also seeks to deliver high-quality services while fostering partnerships within its growing population according to its strategic plan. Observers may continue watching how these efforts impact future employment trends.
