A few days after Midland and surrounding areas experienced frigid temperatures and snow, the Midland Soup Kitchen Ministry reflected on its humble beginnings.

Before the winter storm, the ministry assisted hundreds in preparing at its headquarters located at 1401 Orchard Lane. In a Facebook post shared Sunday, the nonprofit organization—founded by Mariano Sr. and Mary Rendon in 1984—shared a picture of the house where its mission began.

According to the ministry, all it had in its first few years was “a small living room filled with a few tables, shared meals and an abundance of love.”

“Families in need, neighbors experiencing homelessness, anyone who was hungry—they were welcomed at our table … no questions asked,” it said. “We didn’t have much… a little house in south Midland. But we served a BIG God.”

The ministry further attested: “Time and time again, the Lord multiplied what was placed in our hands by Him. What began in that living room grew into something far greater than we could have ever imagined. From those early meals to where we are today, we’ve witnessed God expand this ministry and strengthen its impact throughout our community.”

Management of the ministry passed to Nancy Ivy, the Rendons’ daughter, and her husband, Jason Ivy. The Ivys are assisted by their sons, Nathen and Jay Anthony.

“We look back with gratitude and humility thankful for how far we’ve come, and even more grateful that our mission remains unchanged: to serve with love, dignity and faith,” the post said. “To God be the glory then, now and always!”
